The Runchkin Hill Breeding Philosophy

Temperament-First Selection

Choosing a puppy is a responsibility we take seriously. While we breed for beautiful, athletic dogs, we prioritize the “inner dog” above all else. During the application process, we ask you to share your lifestyle and goals so we can match you with the specific puppy whose energy and drive best suit your home.

The “Off-Switch”

Whether it’s a high-drive Malinois or a stable German Shepherd, we breed for dogs that can “turn it on” for work or play, but also have the essential “off-switch” to be a calm, loving member of your household.

Puppy FAQs

How do I choose my Runchkin Hill puppy?

Temperament is the most important choice in selecting a pup for you or your household.  Looks are far less important to us.  We want to make sure that each of our pups is finding their forever home, and choosing their handlers and family is a responsibility we take very seriously.  In your puppy application, we ask you to share as much as you can about your hopes for your puppy and your lifestyle, and we will work closely with you to ensure that the best pup for you is the pup that comes home with you.

Do Belgian Malinois make good family pets?

The Belgian Malinois makes a terrific companion and loyal partner to active families and experienced dog handlers.  This active, work-driven breed is not for first-time owners.  They are high-energy dogs originally bred for herding, but now serve as excellent partners in many tasks, partnerships, and adventures. Runchkin Hill Farm and Kennel breeds specifically for temperament and skill, and we believe that the Malinois makes an excellent family pet for active lifestyles and owners who are committed to training.

When will I take my new puppy home?

At Runchkin Hill Farm and Kennel, we most often introduce our dogs to their forever homes at eight to ten weeks, unless our dogs need a little extra time for maturity, health, or socialization.

The selection process for accepted applicants begins before any of our mamas prepare for birth.  Once your applications are approved, we will let you know as soon as a litter is expected that suits your needs.

What kind of Shepherd or Malinois do you breed?

At Runchkin Hill Farm and Kennel, we are passionate about continuing our breeding program for family pets and loyal, loving companions.  Our dogs have succeeded as family pets, detection dogs, therapy work, and protection.

Can I have the pick of the litter at Runchkin Hill?

At Runchkin Hill Farm and Kennel, we specifically work with you to choose the right dog for you and your family.  We always aim to help you make a decision not based on appearance, but on your needs and desires for your dog’s activities, temperament, and your experience with the Shepherd or Malinois breeds.  Please contact us if you have specific needs for your four-legged family member or working dog.

Can I have breeding rights?

No breeding rights are available, unless pre-approved by Robin Desmond.

We take great care with our pups, and if you do want to prepare your puppy for breeding, talk with us.  We will supervise the process with you and take every possible effort to pair your puppy with a partner from a top-rated, reputable, AKC-registered co-breeder.
